拝啓：
貴殿が日本で『さんぽ』を著し出版されたことを知りました。
私は退役警察官ですが、消費者擁護新聞の出版者および神父でもあります。この国 の私たちの子どもたちすべての幸せと福祉のために私たち大人は私たちの欲望を制し ていかねばならないことは支持されることと思います。
こうした［子どもたちの福祉を優先すべきだという］希望を実現するための熱望は 強いものの、西暦2000年を迎えようとする今、［そうした希望に逆行するような］大 人優先のことがらが行われてきています。出版に向けての「要望」があるとしても、 そうした要望が認められるものであれ、理解できないものであれ、私たちは私たちの 問題のために子どもたちを犠牲にしてはならないと思います。
人種差別主義、性差別主義、自己中心主義などは私たちの惑星を悩まし続ける問題 ですが、こうした問題は、母親や父親としての私たちが、この地球と呼ばれるこの地 を互いに、そして私たちの最も大切なものである子どもたちと共有すべきであると気 づくまではびこり続けるでしょう。私たちが意図するしないにかかわらず作り上げて きてしまったすべての障害は私たちの子どもたちの誰かをつまづかせるでしょうし、 ひいては私たちすべてに負担となることでしょう。子どもたちも大人になるわけで、 いずれ大人になるそうした子どもたちは私たち今の大人がどのような道を用意してや るかによ って、将来私たちを繁栄させることにも滅亡されることにもなるのです。すべては今 の私たちの選択にかかっています。どうぞよくお考え下さい。

Dear Gentlemen:
It has been brought to my attention that you have both written and adopted for publication "Sampo" in Japan.
I am writing to you as a retired police officia[sic], as a publisher of a consumer advocacy newspaper and as a father. It can be supported that in order for all of our children in this nation to grow up happy, content and functional, we as adults must guard our appeties.
The urge to satisfy those yearnings are great but as we enter the year 2000, we have seen what has resulted from adults putting themselves first. Weather[sic] it is in the "need" to publish, the need to be recognized, or simply a need that they don't understand. We must not sacrifice our children because of our personal problems.
Racism, sexism, egotism and all of the others will plague our planet until we as mothers and fathers realize that we share this place called earth with one another and our most precious [sic], our children. Every stumbling block that we intentionally or unintentionally create that causes one of our children to stumble, will cost us all. We accept that it is the children that become adults and it is those children who will nurture us or destroy us depending on the path we provide for them, it is our chose[sic], please consider it.
