Assisting Learners' Acquisition of a Practical Rule in Problem Solving: Application of an Economic Rule.
University students should have knowledge of an economic rule, "competition makes prices lower." However, this study reveals out that they could not apply the rule to particular instances. Three experiments were carried out to examine the effective instructional methods for application of the rule. The results suggested that the practice of the rule application, as well as the way the rule was described, was crucial to the successful application of the rule. Relationship of Linguistic Processing and Psychological Processing in Conversations Between Native Speakers of Japanese and Nonnative Speakers.
Various features of linguistic and psychological processing in conversation between nonnative Japanese speakers and natives were examined. Twenty-four nonnative Japanese speakers were coupled with native Japanese, and each pair was asked to talk about two topics for 5-8 minutes. The conversation was recorded and analyzed along with the questionnaires given to the native speakers. Those data were compared with the data obtained from 12 native-native pairs. The results indicate that those who talked with the nonnatives tended to ask questions more often than the native-native pairs.
