PART II
[Pompeii]
In my opinion, Floyd's Pompeii is greatest musical document film. Of course their performances are great, but it is no less important that pictures are great. I probably saw them more than 100 times.
As you know, Sigmund Freud said Pompeii is a metaphor for subconsciousness. Floyd is music for being in communication with the unconscious. A secret ceremony of Dionysus tempted to the orgiastic ecstasies like Pink Floyd. The sounding gong is telling the opening of the initiation for ritual, a secret ceremony....

[secrets ceremony]

[quotation from Echoes Mailing List]

I think that video 'Pompeii' is one rite for primitive religions, NOT rock concert. It's just a rite of passage. Roger Waters of beating gong and chanting a spell and hysterical crying is like a "shaman". Shaman of primitive religions wants to fly like a bird and meditates on. 'Pompeii' of Pink Floyd who is hysterical crying like a shrine maiden, beating gong like a ceremony, shaking cymbals like a female spiritualistic medium, chanting a spell like a channeler, is not like a rock'n'roller. Who can say they look like a rock'n'roller? In other words: If ancient shamans appear in today and play the music, I'm sure they will play Floyd-style music (limited before 'Dark Side of the Moon').
A rite of passage is to acquire consciousness of a high order like ascetic practices. But it is holy ecstasy. It is to do access to own subconscious depth. It is to go beyond the own ego. A symbol for shaman is to fly. There is an intimate relationship between shaman and psychedelic, mushroom. There are shamans without using psychedelic -- also are shamans with using psychedelic. Modern rationalism after the Industrial Revolution denied and abandoned shamanism. Such a premodern customs persist hardly anywhere in society yet. But, the shamanism are now being recognized once again. Because the time has come to reconsider the modern rationalism. Its instigator is drug culture. Many rationalists turned to un-rationalists by drugs.
Shaman helps us to reach our subconsious depth. Shaman is never God and it mediates between apparent consciousness and a subconsciousness. So, I think album of 'Meddle' is to mediate. People says they met to God. It is nothing but what saw their subconsciousness. So, when convenient for people, God is apt to appear. People says they saw outer space while tripping in drug. It is nothing but what saw their subconsciousness. Takahashi, my collaborator, made a study of shamans' mental structure and became aware it bears resemblance to Roger Waters.
Needless to say Waters is never a shaman of primitive religion. I mean that Roger Waters is a neo electric shaman. On 'Careful with that Axe, Eugene' in Pompeii, Waters' face is just shaman's face, not rock'n'roller. Also, in the 'The Wall' Waters was disguised as rock'n'roller, because 'The Wall' is a parody and criticism of rock'n'roll.
"I'm spiralling down to the hole in the ground where I hide."
This is characteristic shaman's words.
"It is said that; shaman learns falling into a trance, and in this state the spirit secedes from body, and it soars into the high sky or it falls into the other world, Hades." (from "Shamanism" by Mircea Eliade / translated by Imai)

If you want to find out what's behind this shaman's eyes, you'll just have to claw your way through this Disguise as rock'n'roller.
David Gilmour's Floyd is a rock band. Of course, in 'Pompeii', David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason also are shaman. Shaman is a healer too. 'Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk' seems a shaman song. Floyd music is an ultimate healing music for a deep spirit, and so it is an ultimate religious music.

[Dionysus]By the way; I noticed Mr. Light in sleeve for 'Delicate Sound of Thunder' by Storm Thorgerson is a painting of Dionysus in Pompeii.

Why did they choose Pomeii? It rouses very much our interest. That suggestive many drawings come in sight in a meaning manner. And so I asked Adrian Mabena question at the beginning of 1999.

Sohnosuke Imai:
"I'm an author on Floyd's book in Japan. I wrote in the book that I think 'Pink Floyd at Pompei' is a reproduction of Dionysus' secret ceremony. Have you had such an intention?"
Adrian Maben:
"Yes, it's a good idea. But nothing intentionnal. I'm obviously enjoying the honour but admitted that is then it was nothing intentional."

* Special thanks: An opportunity for question to director Maben is provided by Mr. Jean-Manuel.
* You can see pictures (monochrome) of 'Pink Floyd at Pompei' of high quality here.[Kaleidoscope]
